What is LEDES format?

This article will define the LEDES File Format and provide links to resources that will allow you to create a LEDES invoice file to provide to your client.

LEDES is an acronym that stands for Legal Electronic Data Exchange Standard.

The LEDES format is a plain-text file format used for e-billing in the legal industry.

"e-billing" can be defined as:

1) The formatting of legal billing line items into a LEDES-formatted file. This is commonly referred to as a "LEDES Invoice".

2) Transmitting this file via the internet to the client. This can be as an e-mail attachment or an upload process provided by the client.

3) The content of the LEDES invoice is evaluated by a computer program and is either approved or rejected. The file can be rejected due to improper formatting, improper task and activity coding, or improper billing rates.
